(1)  Introduction of the Center for Optical Research & Science(CORE) 

Director, Prof. Toyohiko Yatagai

The CORE was established in 2007 for advanced research and systematic education in optical science & engineering in collaboration with Canon Inc. Objective of the CORE. A special presentation on optical measurement related to OCT medical imaging will be given.

(2)  Introduction of the Faculty of Engineering & Graduate School of Engineering

Dean, Prof. Miyoshi Ayama

Faculty of Engineering in Utsunomiya University, founded in 1964, consists of 4 departments for undergraduate. Graduate School holds 5 departments including mechanics, electronics, applied chemistry, information science, and optical engineering. A brief introduction of the schools will be given. A special presentation on color vision science will also be given.

(3)  Introduction of the Department of Optical Engineering

Department Chair, Prof. Yukitoshi Otani

Department of Optical Engineering was founded in 2015, in order to set up the systematic educational program in optical engineering with a strong collaboration with the CORE. The program that covers from geometric optics to color science, and research in the laboratories will be introduced. A special presentation on polarization science will also be given.

 

Short biography

Prof. Toyohiko Yatagai

He received BE and PhD in applied physics from the University of Tokyo, in 1969 and 1980, respectively. From 1970 to 1983 he was with Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, He joined the faculty of Institute of Applied Physics, University of Tsukuba in 1983, where he worked on optical instrumentation and optical information processing. In 2007 he moved to Utsunomiya University to launch Center for Optical Research and Education. He is a fellow of SPIE, OSA and JSAP. His current research interests include optical measurement, 3-D imaging and display, holographic optical memory and so on.

 
Prof. Miyoshi Ayama

She obtained the Dr. of Engineering degree from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1983. She has been working in the Graduate School of Engineering at Utsunomiya University, Japan, since 1993, and became the Dean in 2016. She was the Associate Director of the CORE for 9 years. She contributed to the CIE as the Associate Director of the Division 1, Vision and Color, from 2007 to 2014. Her current research interests include the measurement of straylight in the eye, evaluation of discomfort glare, KANSEI evaluation of the color images on the super wide gamut display, and so on.

Prof. Yukitoshi Otani

He is a professor and the head of Department of Optical Engineering, Utsunomiya University, JAPAN. He received his master||s degree from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology in 1990 and his doctor||s degree from the University of Tokyo in 1995. After working for a brief period at HOYA Corp., he was a research associate and an associate professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology until 2010. He was a visiting professor at College of Optical Sciences, the University of Arizona from 2004 to 2005. He jointed the Center for Optical Research and Education(CORE), Utsunomiyta University as a professor from April 2010. His current interests include polarimetry, interferometry, optical measurement and optomechatoronics. He is a SPIE fellow from 2010. He was a member of the board of directors of the Japan Society for Precision Engineering from 2013 to 2016, a chair of International Symposium on Optomechatronic Technology, ISOT 2016, Itabashi, Tokyo and the general char of the Optics and Photonics Japan, OPJ2016. He is the head of Polarization Science and Engineering Group in OSJ from 2015.
