Abstract:Metamaterials have attracted tremendous attention due to their exotic optical properties and functionalities that are not attainable from naturally occurring materials. In particular, metamaterials can be designed to introduce strong spin-orbit coupling for light. In this talk, I will show that combination of chirality and hyperbolicity – an extreme form of anisotropy, can result innontrivial topological orders in metamaterials and consequently topologically protected photonic surface states that are immune from scattering by defects and sharp edges. In addition, I will talk about our recent works on geometric metasurfaces, a unique type of structured surfaces showing spin-dependent abrupt phase discontinuities arising from the Berry (geometric) phase. I will further show that extending the concept of Berry phase to harmonic generations can lead to continuous phase control over the local nonlinear polarizability, which goes beyond the conventional poling techniques.

 

个人简介:英国伯明翰大学物理与天文系教授。2005年从美国新墨西哥大学电子工程系博士毕业。分别于2005-2006年在伊利诺伊大学香槟分校,2006-2010年在加州大学伯克利分校从事博士后工作。2010年加入英国伯明翰大学担任Reader,并于2013年获正教授职位。研究兴趣包括:纳米光子学,超材料与表面等离子激元, 非线性光学等。在自然及其子刊,物理评论,高等材料等期刊上发表多篇论文。获得Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Research Award (2016), Fellow of OSA (2016), ERC Consolidator Grant (2015), IUPAP (International Union of Pure and Applied Physics) Young Scientist Award in Optics (2010)等。目前张霜教授是 Light: Science & Application期刊的编辑。
